nucleus of the hypothalamus; paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus Microbiota are the microorganisms that colonize the internal and external surfaces of the body and contribute to the microbiota-gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication pathway between the brain, intestines, and gut microbiota. The microbiota-gut-brain axis has been shown to influence developmental processes and may explain the high comorbidity between neurological and gastrointestinal diseases. Recent evidence from our and other laboratories suggests that the gut microbiota influence the expression of vasopressin (AVP), a neuropeptide that mediates anxiety, stress and sickness behaviors and oxytocin (OXT), a neuropeptide that is involved in social behavior and energy homeostasis. One way that the gut microbiota can be altered is through diet. Processed foods contain many additives such as emulsifiers, ambiphillic molecules used to stabilize emulsions of oil and water. These emulsifiers alter the gut microbiome and increase intestinal inflammation, leading to increased symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Recently, we have demonstrated that the emulsifiers carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and polysorbate 80 (P80) increase anxiety-like behavior and reduce social behavior. Here, we investigate the roles of AVP and OXT as potential neural mechanisms by which emulsifiers alter anxiety and social behaviors. To test, male and female mice were weaned at 3 weeks of age, started in water (control), CMC or P80 treatment, and remained on treatment throughout the

Effects of Dietary Emulsifiers on Vasopressin and Oxytocin in Mice

Microbiota are micro-organisms that colonize the internal and external surfaces of the body and contribute to developmental processes and the microbiota-gut-brain axis, thereby to the high comorbidity between mental and gastrointestinal diseases. Recent evidence suggests that the gut microbiota influence the expression of vasopressin (AVP), a neuropeptide that mediates anxiety, stress and sickn...

Microbes, Oxytocin, and Healthful longevity

The microbiome is shown to have important roles in human health. Recent studies in mice show intestinal microbes stimulate host neuropeptide oxytocin and immune physiology in a mind-body paradigm with diverse outputs improved systemic wound-healing capacity. Oxytocin is best known for roles in reproduction and immunity, but is more recently implicated in obesity, human bonding, and trust. Micro...

The role of nitric oxide on the oxytocin induce analgesia in mice

Objective(s): Analgesic effects of oxytocin and it's the other physiological effects were well-known. The aim of present study was determination of nitric oxide role on analgesic effects of oxytocin in mice. Materials and Methods: 216 male Albino mice were divided randomly into two experimental groups, tail flick and formalin test. Each experimental group consists of three main groups includin...

The neuroendocrine basis of social recognition.

All social relationships are dependent on an organism's ability to remember conspecifics. Social memory may be a unique form of memory, critical for reproduction, territorial defense, and the establishment of dominance hierarchies in a natural context. In the laboratory, social memory can be assessed reliably by measuring the reduction in investigation of a familiar partner relative to novel co...

Hypopituitarism is associated with lower oxytocin concentrations and reduced empathic ability

PURPOSE Central diabetes insipidus is characterised by arginine vasopressin deficiency. Oxytocin is structurally related to vasopressin and is synthesised in the same hypothalamic nuclei, thus we hypothesised that patients with acquired central diabetes insipidus and anterior hypopituitarism would display an oxytocin deficiency. Moreover, psychological research has demonstrated that oxytocin in...
